This is a beautiful story of friendship and challenge.
In Japan, keeping up with the dead is pretty commonplace. They continue to be part of the family with focus and energy. I think it’s admirable. Humans have a difficult time facing the unknown. The easiest thing is to forget and move on. I think this is a mistake. I like this story because it’s a powerful account of staying connected…
This is a stirring story from Miki Meek of This American Life.

Lauren,
There are so many priceless moments in time we had together that only you and I can cherish for eternity. These are two I feel the
rest of your loved ones would love to hear. I cannot wait to see you again on the other side of this journey. My guess is you’re still traveling, wherever you are!
I love you lkw1084, like the sun misses the moon.

Story by Sybil Ottenstein
I met at a Shabbat dinner of a mutual friend in Tel Aviv and it was soulmate friendship at first sight. Two American girls living in Israel, Lauren new to the country and me already having been there for quite a few years, I welcomed Lauren into my world, and after a few short weeks, it was impossible to imagine life without her. Our most beautiful moments were always by the water, where both of us were most alive.
Knowing Lauren was knowing life at its most extreme. Maybe she needed the water because she was pure fire – the brightest and most intense of all lights. Our friendship was one of the most powerful and influential experiences I have ever known, and her death has quite literally transformed my life. She taught me how to truly feel, how to love, how to fight and her speciality – how to express. Lauren was on a constant mission to learn herself, love herself and spread her light to others. More than anyone I’ve ever known, she was constantly seeking growth, nourishment and ascendance.
Losing Lauren was losing a best friend, a sister and a mirror. She is my angel and I miss her every day.
Rambling memories of a loved LKW, gone in this world, journeying on in the next. I promise, future stories will be more cohesive.

I’ve known Lauren since the 6th grade. I recently saw the film,“Steve Jobs,” and Aaron Sorkin, the writer, described his movie as “a painting, not a photograph” of who Steve Jobs was. And he said that “if you asked a thousand people who knew Steve Jobs for their impressions of Steve Jobs, you’d get a thousand different impressions.” So I guess I can only give you my impression of who Lauren was through my eyes and hopefully that will shed some light on who she was, not only as a person, but as a dear friend.
